The Awakening

In book 3 Kelly finds himself in the worse position an athlete can find him or herself in physically. He's lying in a hospital bed alone. He begins to contemplate his decisions and how he got himself so far off the path to greatness. He blames his own selfish ways, and arrogance. The first character he encounters is also his guiding angel, “Nurse Brown” is there to comfort him and reassure him that anything broken can be fixed once more. She ultimately begins to rebuild his mind, body, and soul.

Kelly is confronted with his decisions and what he must do to change his life's path. His teammates, his mother, and friends visit him throughout his stay. All show tremendous support for him in his time of need. His room is private and paid for but no one knows by whom.

Kelly is faced with a new challenge in life as his coach tells him that the school will not give him an extra year to finish his studies. This is the harsh reality of business with a college institution. The fairytale is over once a player of his status is no longer of use to them.

He eventually realizes he has no chance of succeeding without help, and asks Nurse Brown to help him graduate on time. She happily accepts and begins her lessons with books he's never read before, books that open his mind to another world of knowledge he knew nothing about, "Knowledge Of Self". Kelly is introduced to the knowledge of his greatness as a black man, and starts to understand that people should always be judged by their character and not their color or status. He learns of things formal westernize education never taught him as a black man, and uses it to empower himself, and love himself.

After a small mistake, Nurse Brown gives him another chance but demands that he no longer smokes weed until after school breaks. She doesn't want to take his youth away from him, but she doesn't want him to be stuck in it either.

Nurse Brown eventually introduces him to her God Daughter Erica, and Kelly is immediately smitten. Erica will be tutoring Kelly throughout the rest of the year, as Nurse Brown won't have the time. She's an outstanding student with a boyfriend who's becoming a doctor, and Kelly is told he has no chance with her, and shouldn’t try. Nurse Brown makes it clear again not to waste her time, as Erica will cut the lessons off if she finds out he has smoked weed at any point or slacks off. Erica is beautiful, smart, and doesn't play games. She's goes to Big State as well and knows all about Kelly.

Upon strolling through the hospital Kelly is faced with the grave realities of life and how precious it is when he ends up in the trauma ward. He witnesses babies who never got to take their first steps as they cling to life and he's saddened by his abuse of his own life. It begins to truly sink in just how important it is to make the right decisions as best you can, and to cherish as many moments humanly possible.
